History

Only a small number of Muslims—no more than six families—lived in West Silvertown less than 20 years ago. Muslims in the area have long found it challenging to attend Jumu’ah prayers and other local prayers. They had a difficult time educating their kids about Islam and were unable to go to any Madrasah classes or other Islamic institutions. Muslims were the minority and had the fewest resources.

Allhamdulillah, A few locals came together just over ten years ago and realised they had to take action. They located a neighbourhood community centre and made the decision to contact mosques and other Islamic cultural centres to ask for assistance. They eventually located an Imam from another Muslim Trust, and together they negotiated a contract with the neighbourhood community centre to be allowed to use their facilities for Friday prayers. Unfortunately, Friday prayers are still the only time it is used.

By 2018, there were an average of 50–60 regular worshippers in West Silvertown. By 2022, we now have more than 300 worshipers who attend Friday prayers, all thanks to the grace of Allah.

The Community Centre is the only place available and very limited to availability and no other places of worship within walking distance for the elderly, the young, and the female are available.

Allhamdulillah Since 2018, a small group of locals have made the decision to form their own committee in an effort to build a permanent place of worship in West Silvertown. These nine individuals have now developed a long-term strategy and charitable setup to create a place of worship.

We now need the Muslim residents in the area to lend their support by giving us donations and other financial resources so we can purchase or rent a property in the neighbourhood to serve as a facility or place of worship.

Masjid Silvertown’s serves the spiritual, religious and communal needs of area Muslims by means of nurturing their faith, upholding their values, and fostering the well-being of the surrounding community through worship, charity, education, outreach, and civic engagement.

Through worship, charity, education, outreach, and civic participation, Masjid Silvertown’s meets the spiritual, religious, and communal needs of local Muslims while growing their religion, maintaining their values, and improving the quality of life in the neighbourhood.
